Within the framework of the consultation organized on 27 October, 2009, on the theme “Ethics and transparency, Dorothée Briaumont, Director General of the Comité 21 speaked about the concertation process and the role of the Comité 21.

The purpose of the Comité 21 is to set up the conditions for exchanges and partnerships between all these players (companies, local authorities, associations, institutional actors…) so that they adopt and together apply the principles of sustainable development within a given region or country.

Upon the closing of the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, I would like to call for a more open and integrated approach involving all stakeholders and to advocate for the transition from an economy based on volume to an economy based on value: the issue today is no longer managing large volumes of water, but rather contributing social and environmental know-how that is adapted to the needs of communities and users.

This new edition of the Forum provided the opportunity for all players working on water-related issues to assess the advances achieved over the past three years. These are real but terribly insufficient compared to the challenges of water access and climate change! In order to meet these challenges, an integrated approach and innovation are the key to sustainable, well-balanced progress to which we dedicate the development of our professions.

“Think outside the water box!” says Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO about the 3rd World Water Assessment Programme (WAPP) report launched yesterday at the World Water Forum, referring to the need to set up mechanisms for more local consultation and involvement of all players (from businesses to environment activists) to face climate and development issues related to water.
